For $125 more so over the 1600 you'll get dual core, 2GB RAM, Windows 7, wireless keyboard and mouse and the VESA mount (its included). And the dual core will make a difference if you are playing back 1080P source material. Be sure to download the flash beta 10.1 which uses the Ion processor's hardware acceleration or you will be disappointed. Also need the latest NVIDIA drivers. I'm playing movies both through Media Player Classic - Home Cinema and utilizing the PC to run the latest BOXEE beta which while having some bugs really is fun to play with. Boxee will consolidate your media library on your PC or network share (I'm using an UNRAID server, which is fabulous as a media server) along with content from the internet (TV shows, Movies, Apps, You Tube etc..). Thinking about playing with XBMC next (Which Boxee is based on). The HDMI out is working great for both Video and Audio (not all HDMI outs on PC's support audio as I found out the hard way). There is a utility with the NVIDIA graphics to size the desktop to exactly your flat screen dimensions (no need to play with aspect ratio on your TV). While not my use, it would make a great extra PC for the kids or significant other if all they do is surf, with an occasional word document here or there. HTPC? - Mission Accomplished for me. By Y. Z. Four months ago, I set out to find a way to link my 50" plasma TV to the Internet. However, my initial attempt of using a 3+ year old Desktop to that end fell well short of my expectations in numerous areas. Round two of my search after dedicated Media players yielded a list of very capable and quite popular devices such as WD TV Live, Asus O!Play, Popcorn Hour with its soon to be released next iteration: Popbox (3/20/2010), and more. For me, a repeating issue with most of the above was the limited number of sites one can go to on the Internet (or 'worse' having to pay subscription), not having a built-in hard-drive and so on. The lure of total flexibilty and open-system approach was irresistible, and a continuing search revealed Acer Revo AR1600 and R3610 which seemed to fit the bill, with reviews to match. At 200 and 320 US dollars respectively, picking the right one turned out to be more than a case of "Good enough vs. Nice to have": Obviously, more power as in the R3610 never hurts when future applications might become more demanding. The R3610 comes with Windows 7 Home Premium which was a wonderful experience for me on an Asus M91MT Tablet that I had for 3 months now, and I prefered that over the solid but dated Windows XP. In the aftermath, the wireless keyboard and mouse turned out to be excellent. The reception for both never misses a keystroke or a mouse click even 15 feet away from the PC, and with NO direct line of sight (the Acer sits mostly hidden in a cabinet). That alons meant a savings of 40+ dollars over buying a separate wireless keyboard/mouse. With 2G RAM in the R3610, you can be comfortable increasing the allocated memory for Video - in the bios - from the default 256Meg to 512. Buying a second 1G RAM for the AR1600 would run you abour 25 Dollars. People do report good picture with the 1G RAM on the AR1600, but the perfect, no-hickup streaming HD I get may be partially helped by the added memory. As it goes, I cannot be totally scientifc here, only report the results. By Veleno I have been waiting for this product for 22 months, having seen the announcement and demo at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronic Show in January 2007. I have long been a fan of Sling Media and have used its products for close to three years. I have also recommended them to many friends and colleagues. I am a technologist and a "gadget freak" and seldom return products. Even less frequently I write reviews. I received the SlingCatcher yesterday, after pre-ordering it on Amazon, and I could not have imagined, 24 hours ago, that I would now be packing it to return it. In a word, this product is a disaster. It is expensive for the features it offers (I paid $299 at Amazon, and I note that the product is already discounted two days later) and it is poorly implemented. The installation was the only positive part of the experience. It was very simple to install (even simpler than a Slingbox) and recognized the network immediately. I have a wired, 1 Gigabit network available at the right location. The SlingCatcher does not have WiFi. The only peculiarity is that it took several minutes to download a software upgrade. Given that I have one of the first units to come off the boat, I wonder how many bugs were discovered during the trip from China to the USA. I should say that I did not experience any of the installation problems mentioned by other users. The SlingCatcher lets you do three things (according to what's written on the box): watch video from the Internet; watch video from a Slingbox; and watch video from a PC. But be careful about making assumptions about what these descriptions mean! Watch video from the Internet -- while you might think that this feature would allow you to browse the web and stream videos from it, it is not quite so. You have to have a computer on your network running a software program called "SlingProjector," which allows you to "project" whatever you can play on your computer onto the SlingCatcher (and your TV.) I downloaded the SlingProjector software to my laptop (which I operate wirelessly) and to my home computer which sits on my 1Gig network (iMac running Windows because there is no SlingProjector software for the Mac OS yet!) I was able to go to the web from my laptop and stream software which in turn was streamed from my computer to the SlingCatcher and my TV. In order to stream a Hulu or Youtube video, the software lets you capture the portion of the screen where the video is being shown via a "cropping" feature. This works reasonably well, but the resulting quality is not that great. Part of it is a function of the quality of the incoming video, but I think that the fundamental problem is that as you stream the signal twice, you lose quality. In addition to that, you are showing the video on a large screen TV, and that is bound not to look as good as on the computer. So, expectations are high and quality is lower than it could be. Not a good outcome. I then streamed videos from my home computer on the 1G network, with similar results. Note that in order to do that, you better have the SlingCatcher, your computer and your tv in the same room, otherwise you have to go back and forth all the time. I was watching a video and all of a sudden a computer message popped up right in the middle of the screen, which required going back to the home computer to click on the message. But the worst part of the SlingProjector was that it did not work in some instances. I wanted to show a PowerPoint presentation on the tv screen, and in order to do that I did not use the "cropping" feature, but I put the SlingProjector in full screen mode. After opening the PowerPoint file, it was not possible to get the thing going from my laptop to the SlingCatcher. I managed to see a screen, but then the whole thing would freeze and I could not make it work even after restarting and resetting the box. After a

LOW PRICE, LOWER QUALITY By Kenneth Siller I never had a problem with an RCA product for over 30 years until I received this Blu-ray player. When I hooked it up, the player would lock up when the disc menu was on the screen. The remote control didn't work and the play button on the unit itself didn't work. For the HDMI output, the player would revert back to 720p every time I turned it off. When playing a Blu-ray disc or DVD, the audio wouldn't be in DTS or Dolby Digital. It was only in Dolby Surround. I had a replacement unit sent and it had the same problems. It seems that RCA sacrificed quality for a low price. Use and setup is easy. I have not experienced any of the issues described by the other reviewers. I could not find any new software updates but during inital setup the unit will react slowly. Once it is done finding the connection to the internet a couple of times it has not had any slow reaction times. I hope they update it so Hulu and Pandora can work with it but for under 100 dollars it is a steal. This is a basic unit with a HDMI and some other audio output options. I would say that its very limited in its appeal and use. Read on for more. Veebeam says that their product is good for viewing streaming video with, and it is in a limited sense. I had my veebeam hooked up via hdmi to my tv, and was streaming from a windows 7 laptop about 10 feet away from the tv (you really need to be in the same room for the veebeam to work). I found that there was a 1 second delay between what was on the laptop and what was on the tv screen. So if you were hoping to use the veebeam as a wireless second monitor you can forget that. The image quality was a bit choppy as well unless you use the veebeam player, their free media player. When using this I had good quality video and good quality audio streaming from my computer to my tv - but you can't queue up netflix or other such services with this. It would have to be either media on your computer or dvds/blu-ray discs in your disc drive. The biggest use of the veebeam would if you want to use it for Hulu, or Netflix, or a similar service, but the diminished quality unless using their player limits that use. Perhaps even more limiting is the fact that you really need the computer in the same room as your tv to make use of the device. Considering that with most modern devices you can hook up your computer to your tv via hdmi or some other cabled solution and get better quality, the only use for veebeam would if you have a desktop in the same room as your tv and don't want to bother running long cables everywhere, or you have an older tv or older computer where you can't make the appropriate connection. Even if you are in one of the above situations I am still doubtful that the veebeam is worth $150. If they could have gotten it down to instant streaming (whether through a powered usb transmitter or some other means) the veebeam's value proposition would be much higher. As it is I see it as being a very specific solution to a very specific problem. It will undoubtably be exactly what some people want, but on the other hand it is not powerful or versatile enough to be applicable to everyone's situation. I think 3 stars reflects this fairly well. Great PC-to-TV wireless device for streaming movie By Nicolas Brusson Just got my Veebeam box this week and this is pretty addictive I must say. Install is pretty simple with the main box going into the TV (HDMI in my case) and you can even hook it up to your audio system if you have one. On the PC side, you just need to install a client. The use case is then pretty awesome as all you need to do is put the dongle to your PC and turn on your TV. The PC will immidiatly start replicating wirelessly to your TV with a bit a wireless USB magic... The really cool thing is that you have a play mode where you can select a movie file from you laptop and play it wirelessly onto your TV while you can still do emails or else on the laptop! I must say I was initially skeptical about the video quality but after trying it, I am sold. I have tried some 720p files of action movie and it feels like watching a blu-ray on my TV eventhough the signal is in fact wirelessly transmitted from my laptop onto the TV set. I have tried streaming HD over wifi and it's a real pain... this solves it! Bottom line: If you have lots of movies / TV series saved on our laptop or external HD and you don't want to crawl under your TV set to connect an HDMI or else... Setup is a breeze and it even came with a DVI cable to hook up to my TV. It also has RCA cables. I have almost 1TB of movies in various formats(.avi .wmv .mpg) and it plays every one. Sometimes I cannot use the skip function if it doesn't fully support the file but it still always plays it. Transferring the files over was a bit harder. It was going to take 7 days to copy 1TB of files over from my server to the hard drive on the unit that I put in it. I even tried a direct cable and it was just as slow. I don't think it does any conversion but it is very slow. When you add a new hard drive in this unit, it formats it with Linux. When I put the drive from the Digital Entertainer in my Windows server it wanted to format the drive. I had to boot into a Linux OS and then I was able to copy the files over very quickly. The software that comes with the unit is pretty nice also. It lets you tag each movie file with information from the Internet Movie Database. It even displays a box cover. This unit also stores and plays music as well as Youtube videos streaming from the Internet. It will connect to your network by wireless or wired, or it can simply be a standalone unit. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the search feature in the unit. When I want to search for example, the movie "Zoolander", I input the letter "Z" from the remote and instead of filtering every movie that starts with "Z", it lists every movie with the letter "Z" in it like this... Campbell Let me start by saying I was NOT looking for a Windows Media Center Extender, I was looking for a device that could handle my library of stored media (movies and music), especially it's ability to play DVD images, including the disc menus. For this purpose (provided you have a wireless N or wired network connection) the EVA-9150 is a solid choice, handling virtually any file format you can throw at it without problems. The Digital Entertainer Elite also streams Internet radio stations, and has a nifty RSS feed reading applet built-in. An application is included that does a decent job of helping you catalog your media library, including tools to help facilitate the creation of tags for media files. My favorite feature in this by far is the ability to go pre-fill a tag with information from IMDB: just go to the page for the movie, click the "fill" button, and all of the information about the movie populates the appropriate fields! The EVA-9150 includes a 500GB hard drive, but unless your home network is slow and you're having buffering problems, I doubt it would be of much use. If it is, you can swap it out for drives of up to 1TB in size. Output options are plentiful, including HDMI, component and digital outputs, as well as standard composite and analog audio, so interfacing to virtually any home theater system is realatively easy. Wireless and wired networking are built in and easy to use, and software is included to help you catalog the media on the various devices you may have around your house. Overall, I found everything relatively easy to use for a person familar with PCs and home theater, though the sheer number of options may be intimidating to a novice. I'll get right to the point, because I know there are a lot of questions from current Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player owners and those sitting on the fence about the capabilities of the Live in comparison to other media players on the market. I also considered the ASUS O!Play ($99) while waiting for the Live's release or the Seagate FreeAgent Theater+HD ($135). The WDTV is a proven quantity and for the Live, I had high expectations. Cosmetically, not much has changed. Not even the box. The Live is nearly identical to the WDTV except in color, being matte grey instead of shiny piano black. Ease of setup and usage carries over from its forebear, so WDTV users will be right at home with the Live's interface and settings. At the rear, the ports have been slightly rearranged to make room for a LAN port and component out. HDMI is now 1.3 instead of 1.2, capable of a color depth of 12 bits per pixel. Batteries are included in the box, as are component and composite cables, but bring your own HDMI or LAN cable. Building on the strengths of the original (and successful) WDTV, WD has made an already excellent player even better. They listened to users and addressed two of the biggest complaints of the WDTV, namely: lack of network connectivity and lack of DTS down-mixing. I am pleased to report that on these two counts, the Live is a winner, packaged inside the same compact form factor as its predecessor and sold at a very reasonable price. The most exciting thing is network connectivity because the Live can be made wireless! 1) Network connectivity: out of the box, the Live connects via CAT-5. I have no interest in connecting USB hard drives to the Live because it limits my mobility. I have 2 NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices (D-Link DNS321 2-Bay SATA, RAID 0/1 Gigabit Ethernet Port Network Storage Enclosure and D-Link 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure) and have been streaming movies wirelessly to my PlayStation 3, but I don't like the PS3's lack of MKV support and wasteful energy consumption. My PS3 can now go back to being a dedicated game and Blu-ray machine. I was surprised to discover that my AirLink 101 AWLL6070 150Mbps 802.11n Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter (purchased for a failed WDTV networking hack attempt) worked. I plugged it in, changed the Live's setting to wireless and it saw my wireless network with no fuss. I really have to hand it to WD for making the device open-ended, unlike the NETGEAR Digital Entertainer Live (Black) (which I tested and returned), which requires a proprietary $40 Netgear dongle. Other dongles will work too with the Live, and WD has a forum listing them. 2) DTS down-mixing: this was another shortcoming of the original WDTV. The Live down-mixes DTS to 2.0 so you don't need to slave it to an audio receiver anymore. Many of my MKV's are encoded with DTS, so this is another huge improvement. DTS Master Audio does not seem to be supported, but I am not very concerned as DTS MA is rarely encountered in the wild (though that may change in the future). All my files are MP3, AAC, AC3, or DTS audio streams, which all work on the Live. Many of the tested MKVs have multiple audio streams for different language tracks. You can also mux additional tracks and subtitles into the MKV file with the free and awesome mkvmerge GUI program. Subtitle files can be downloaded from sites like DivxStation. DTS downmixing means now I can take a portable drive of movies over to a friend's house and not worry about compatibility, greatly increasing the versatility and value of the Live. The inclusion of both component and composite outs removes the worry about older TV's. And like the WDTV, the Live will downsample to standard def for non-HDTV's. However, if you have an HDTV and an AVR, you'll want to use them for maximum enjoyment. But the most

By Kevin Nicholls I wasn't even in the market for a 3D TV, but when my Sony HDTV blew yet another bulb, I decided it was time for something new. Initially, I planned on getting one of the new Sharp 60" Quattron models, and headed to a nearby big box store to check out the selection. Picture quality was most important to me, where I was willing to accept a plasma if it blew me away, but I was definitely siding towards LCD or LED. I wasn't too shocked to find that while plasmas were nice, they weren't "that" nice, and settled in to the Sharp. On my way out, I thought I'd check a couple of the 3D displays, just to be 100% sure I wasn't making a purchase I'd regret as soon as 3D content became more widespread. I looked at a couple of Panasonic models with active shutter glasses, and found that the 3D looked acceptable, but the glasses weren't comfortable on my head or to my eyes. A DirecTV rep all but insisted that I look at a high-end Samsung model connected to a DirecTV receiver, and I immediately noticed that getting the thing to display 3D apparently required messing with the DirecTV remote, the Samsung remote, and continually re-syncing the active glasses. "No, thanks." I thought. Then I noticed an unloved LG display, with a bucket (yes, an actual bucket) of scratched passive glasses. No way was this going to look good, but it wasn't like I didn't have a few minutes to spare. I was absolutely blown away. By far, the best 3D experience I've seen. Standing about six feet from the screen, there was a scene from an IMAX documentary where a fish seriously looked like it came out about halfway between where I was standing, and where the TV was. And I could see parasitic fish on the nose of that fish, moving around. It was incredible, clear, and I knew it had to be pretty expensive. Much to my surprise, it was in the same league as the Panasonic models. I had to have it. Doing more research online, I saw that Amazon's price was even better (better, in fact, than a national warehouse club sells the non-3D version of this TV for). I ordered on a Monday, and scheduled my (free) shipping for Thursday afternoon. The delivery people came 15 minutes from the start of my four-hour delivery window, with no hassle at all. Out of the box, the picture quality on this TV is pretty awesome. Better than I remembered it being in the store, for sure. But, I did notice that motion seemed really... weird. I wasn't sure if it was my satellite receiver, or the TV, but things just didn't seem to move naturally. After spending some time adjusting the dejudder and deblur settings, I was able to make the motion normal. But then, I figured, I might as well calibrate everything. Using a combination of the calibration feature on the Life Blu-Ray and recommended settings on various forums, I was able to achieve an absolutely stunning picture. Seriously, this thing looks like it cost hundreds upon hundreds more when it's calibrated. 1080i / 1080p content looked absolutely brilliant. SDTV, on the other hand, isn't the best I've seen. It's certainly acceptable, and arguably on the better side of what's commonly found on LCD / LED models, but I'd probably consider getting something different if most of your viewing is going to be sub-DVD quality content. Then it was time to break out the 3D. I snagged a copy of Tron: Legacy (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) and spent most of the movie sitting with a dumb smile on my face. The picture quality and depth were outstanding. Don't fall for the "active / passive" hype. Watching 3D content with the LG's passive glasses is certain to please anybody who can see. And going back to my memory of the Samsung set, when the LG detects 3D, a box pops up that tells you to put your glasses on. That's it. No messing around endlessly with modes to get it working.
