Bernard I was a little apprehensive about buying this player because I had read some reviews that were critical of the setup and configuration for this device. While that did turn out to be the weakest part of the package, I decided to take a chance because I have always been partial to Sony products. I am sure glad I did. I was so impressed with this player that I decided to write a review. First it is extremely compact. You can check the specs for the dimensions. It fit perfectly in the spot I had for it with plenty of room to spare. One nice design feature is that the vent holes are in the rear so I was not concerned about setting my cable box on top of it. The setup presented a few challenges but if you are reasonably tech savvy you won't have any problems. If you aren't, then get a friend to help you. The interface is much better than I was led to believe. If you are familiar with the PS3 it uses the same award winning crossbar navigation. One review I read called it confusing but I am very pleased with it. Basically this little device does nearly everything a PS3 does except play games. (BTW, I bought this for a bedroom. I already have a PS3. If I was buying my first blu-ray player I would recommend buying a PS3 instead.) Here are a few tips for setup. First, the main feature I wanted, Netflix support, did not appear on the menu initially. You have to drill down the menus to select something like "add bonus features." It also helps to have someone help you because I had to run back and forth to my computer and router to press buttons and enter configuration codes, etc. This would likely be the case with any similar device, however. I also recommend that the first thing you do once you get connected to the internet is to update the system software. (This is a nice feature because just like a PS3 or Xbox you can get updates to the system as improvements are made. Sony recommends checking for updates every 2 months.) Another tip is that it supports an iPhone app called "Media Remote". That appears on the box but I did not see it in the manual. Just go to the App Store and search for "Media Remote" and you can get an app for no added cost that allows your iPhone (or Android based phone)to act as a remote from anywhere on your network. This is most useful for entering text using the iPhone's software keyboard. Now why do I like it so much? Besides performing flawlessly, there are a lot of extras that aren't marketed much if any. First surprise - there was a 3D Blu-Ray Disc in the box! (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader 3D.) I didn't see anything in the ads or on the box advertising this so this was an unexpected bonus. (I bought my player direct from Sony because I had a large number of points built up from my Sony credit card, so I don't know if players purchased from other sources include the disc but I guess that they would.) It is probably in the specs but there are USB ports on both the front and the back. If you leave a flash drive in the rear port it acts like a disk drive for BD Live content, although so far I have not been that impressed with BD live. I don't know if it will help performance in other ways, but flash drives are cheap so I put a 4GB drive in the rear port. Another pleasant surprise is that it plays Super Audio CDs. Although this is pretty much a dead format (as is just about everything with the great quality of internet streaming today) it is still nice to be able to play the few discs that I have. I was also pleasantly surprised at the amount of free content available, such as movies from Crackle. It also supports YouTube, Skype, Facebook, Hulu and many others. Actually I think this would be a great device even if it didn't have the blu-ray disc player. It also supports a DLNA home network allowing you to stream content from a DLNA enabled comptuer.

Great bang for your buck with AMBoughey UPDATE - July 2010 New features are added to network news - Daily news feeds in German Pandora - Internet Radio Fox Sports - Coming Soon Twitter - Coming Soon 5 stars sounds very generous, but for the money the BDP provides a large network. This is the third network BDP me to have adapted and used, I recently Samsung BD-P1590 Review - Blu-Ray disc player - Exclusive - Netflix, Pandora, against (similar benefits), this is a much better machine. I also think the picture quality and upscaling of SD DVD is significantly better than the comparable price LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc player running multiple Blu-ray movie to test, including BD-Live enabled content, are very fast boot times were. Quick Installation Guide tells you about this, explaining that it uses more power in standby mode, but it's worth too much fast loading. Blu Ray looks SUPERB - Panasonic web site says (PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction) Sounds geeky, but the picture is great at both 1080i and 1080p By default the 24fps is set to off, but if you have a home set up that supports it, it's easy to switch back. SD Card slot, and USB interface great for home pictures, movies and photo's, very easy to use. Nicely tucked away under a discreet panel in the front so no fiddling among the back wires. Out of the box set up for networking took me about 15 minutes. Very easy on screen instruction, easy to use remote, and set up can be either set to easy mode, or you can revisit the main menu at any time for finer adjustments on audio, video output, resolution and aspect ratio etc. The more involved set up options are however a little limited if you are used to close to pro tweaking on high end visual and audio equipment But then again, this is an entry level kind of priced machine. What do you get for network? The VIERA system is a breeze, nice graphics, menu screen and options. I hard wired mine to the back Ethernet port with a Cat6 cable - Cat5 works without a problem, but for streaming (especially HD content) the Cat6 made the Netflix signal bar light up to HD most of the time. It is wireless ready. You can use a USB dongle (takes some tweaking) or better still a Linksys by Cisco Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter. What's nice is that(unlike Samsung) you don't have to buy a special adapter. My preference would always be to hard line, but if that's not an option, and you must have wireless (assuming you have boat loads of bandwidth) you can buy an adapter, or pay $80 more and buy it's big brother the Panasonic DMP-BD85 WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black) Whats on the Network? 1)Netflix - unlimited free streaming movies (a lot in HD if your connection is good enough) documentaries, and TV shows from their "Watch Instantly" library, if you are a current subscriber of at least their $899 plan - free trial available. 2)Amazon on Demand - Bags of movies and content to rent, buy, or even view free webisodes, trailers, documentaries and so on. Not a huge thing for me personally as I like Netflix, but very nice to have. Simply activate online at Amazon and you're there - very easy on screen user friendly menus. 3)Blomberg - Sort of on screen RSS feed with stocks, bonds and news headlines. Nice to have but not essential. 4) Weather forecast, enter your zip code and set to default, or store multiple sites across the US for up to date weather news and information Again, not something I need but nice to have. 5)Picasa Web albums - share pictures with friends and family, look at your own, and other albums on your TV. Nice feature. 6)You Tube - browse, or log into your account online 7)Coming Soon?? - Your guess is as good as mine, could be for VUDU or something else, at least they are.

More Blu By Chris Boylan With the BD60, Panasonic adds VIERA Cast online content access from its previous base model, the DMP-BD35. You might think that this is an excellent Blu-ray, even Excellent (yes, I know it's not a word), and it does. The BD60 features a reproduction of Blu-ray is very good upconverting DVD as well, passing difficult tests like the HQV benchmark discs with great success (as in good condition in real movies). The BD60 can decode all the latest surround sound codecs (including DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD) to PCM through HDMI or can transmit these to a compatible receiver in their native formats. Moreover, if past Panasonic players are any indication, the BD60 should prove to be one of the best on disc compatibility, something that has affected many players from other brands. But there are still a few drawbacks with the BD60 that keep it from getting 5 stars: * Speed: the BD60 is not quite as fast to load discs as the Samsung BD-P3600 or the LG BD300, though it is faster than last year's Samsung models (12/03/09 update - this is about 20% faster with the 2.0 firmware and above) * Limited online content: YouTube on a Blu-ray player is cool, but it doesn't compare to Netflix online streaming in terms of quality and selection of content (Netflix is available on LG and Samsung players). Amazon's On-Demand streaming service has been announced for VIERA Cast but is not yet available (update: it is available now). The good news is that VIERA Cast can be enhanced with more content over time without requiring the purchase of a new player. * Less than integrated operation: moving between Blu-ray and VIERA Cast online content is not as seamless as it could be. You have to completely stop playback and exit back to the Panasonic player's splash screen in order to get to the VIERA Cast "home screen" to access online content And what's with that annoying BEEP when you go through the VIERA Cast menus? * SD card requirement: Like its predecessors, the BD60 lacks on-board storage so you'll need to add an SD or SDHC card to enjoy BD-Live content. Panasonic at least could have thrown in a 1GB or 2GB SD card in the box. Also, while the BD60 adds a USB port to the front panel, it does not support DivX or Xvid video playback so this limits the USB port's usefulness. A USB storage device connected to the BD60's USB port can only be used for playback of MP3 music files and viewing of JPEG digital images. If your primary goal is to get a reliable, high performance Blu-ray/DVD player then none of the above should really matter to you (except possibly the operation speed, which is really about average as far as the current players go) and you should strongly consider the BD60 But if you're more interested in viewing content online as well as on those shiny silver discs, then you might want to wait to see what else VIERA Cast has to offer over the coming months. Or get the best of all possible worlds by buying the BD60 for Blu-ray and DVD and picking up a Roku box just for online streaming. In terms of differences between the BD60 and the step-up DMP-BD80 model, the main enhancements in the BD80 are multi-channel analog output (for compatibility with older non-HDMI receivers), Divx playback, vibration isolating feet and "High Clarity Audio" which allows you to disable the analog video processing if you're using HDMI for the video signal, thereby (theoretically at least) improving overall sound quality If these features are not essential, then save yourself some money and get the BD60 instead. 12/03/09 Update: Some owners of the BD60, BD70V and BD80 have reported a random freeze or pause in playback while watching Blu-ray Discs. While we never saw it during our review of the BD60 and BD80, we did see it on the DMP-BD70V (review available on Big Picture Big Sound web site). Stelmack I already own a Sony BDPS-360 down, as our Blu-Ray player, but wanted a streaming player for upstairs (Xbox360 one cares that below). Since I will not have a 3D TV for quite some time and have wired Ethernet runs on the corresponding space, the 470/570 offer me anything about this player, so I bought the 370th Blu-Rays are very quick to load. Checked out Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, and the biggest delay in getting to the movie skipping the previews was ahead. Menu was launched in just a few seconds, and the film very quickly thereafter. Maybe 30 seconds after the start of the disc until I saw the movie. The remote control does have an Open / Close button on it. This was not a big deal for me with the 360, but others complained about him, so I thought I would call it. Streaming takes a bit of setup, with the biggest item of note being that you need to register your Blu-Ray on internetsony.tv before activating the streaming features. I had fits trying to create an account directly on that site, but creating a SonyStyle account first and then activating here worked much better. This works similar to Netflix activation in that you get a 4 symbol code from the player, enter it into your account, and now the Blu-Ray is activated. I then needed to go through the typical Netflix activation, getting another code from the player and entering it into my Netflix account. Amazon VOD linked directly to the Sony account and was then available on the player. Instructions for each of these are included in the screens on the Blu-Ray player, where it will provide the codes and the website address, and you then go the computer and finish linking from there. Netflix works only off your Instant Queue, so you need to add movies to that queue on the website (or from the Xbox360 or other device with a full browser) Amazon VOD seems to have a fairly complete browser included. Netflix HD quality was reasonable, but most importantly about what I get on the computer or Xbox360; the player does not interfere in any way. This player was my first experience with Amazon VOD, and I must say the Sample HD clip (Superman Returns) was a lot higher than I expected, and actually better than most OnDemand offerings I get from my cable company (TWC NC). So for Blu-Ray playback and Internet streaming, the box does a really good job. I wish the Netflix interface was more robust like the videogame consoles have, but actual playback and access to the Instant Queue works fine. (Updates for this paragraph below) The big disappointment, and the one that keeps it from getting 5 stars, is that the SonyStyle page for the player lists DLNA as a feature. This is the standard for letting media devices connect to your computer and stream video / pictures / music over the network Services like PlayOn also support this. DLNA, however, is not actually active on the player. From checking other sites, no one knows yet if this will be available in a future firmware update, or if the site is incorrect. If DLNA support is critical to your decision making, you may want to hold off until there is some answer on the DLNA picture. Aside from that, I'm really happy with it as Blu-Ray player and Netflix/Amazon VOD streamer. I have not yet tried a standard DVD, or any of the music streaming services. I'll update this review if anything changes as I use the player more. UPDATE MARCH 1, 2010: Sony has updated the product page and changed the footnote for DLNA support. It is now due in a July 2010 firmware update. That's good news, and once the firmware ships I'll try to remember to report back on how well it works. If it works well the review will probably bump to 5 stars, as this is a pretty full-featured, fast, stable Blu-Ray player for under $200, especially if like me wireless and 3D are just not important

Colin McGraw I recently bought the new Apple TV, but was curious how the Roku XD compared. After all, while I like the Apple TV, it's tied to the Apple ecosystem, for better or worse. Meanwhile the Roku offered a broader feature set, but not as much of an established brand as Apple. Luckily, I was able to satisfy my curiosity by getting a Roku XD, and I thought my experiences and opinions might be useful for those shopping for such internet-streaming set top boxes. --------------------------------------------------------- Quality/Content --------------------------------------------------------- My first and biggest question was, "How does the quality compare?". 1080p capability is one of Roku's biggest selling points against Apple, because the Apple TV "only" streams 720p. What I found was that it was a mixed bag. Roku has the capability to stream 1080p, but something surprising is that a huge portion of available content isn't HD to start with and doesn't take full advantage of Roku's hardware Some content you can stream from Amazon and Netflix looks little better than VHS quality, while some looked somewhere between DVD and HD broadcast quality. The vast majority of Netflix, for example, is SD content including most bigger-name movies that make their way to the library. Thus, the HD capability of Roku is MOST noticeable in Amazon Video On-Demand's vast library of HD TV shows and movies. Amazon Video On-Demand offers everything you could find through Apple TV's store and then some, but it has a superior pricing model. You can PURCHASE TV shows for .99c vs. .99c rentals on Apple TV, and you may save a buck or two renting older movies, especially if they're SD. A drawback (maybe an advantage to some) to the Amazon's On-Demand store is its availability of soft-core porn, so parents be ready to tweak parental controls a little more than you'd have to with Apple TV, which limits its offerings to R-rated major studio movies --------------------------------------------------------- Flexibility --------------------------------------------------------- The biggest selling point of the Roku in my opinion is the flexibility already established with its "channels" store, which is basically like an app store for your Roku. The big-three apps are "Amazon Video On-Demand", "Netflix" and "Hulu+ (coming soon)", but you can also choose channels from "Pandora" (if you like listening to music on your TV), or "UFC" (though the UFC channel is a bit of disappointment since they want to charge you $45 a pop to view past UFC events!). Apple TV doesn't currently have an app store, though one is probably coming, and it will soon pick up the ability to stream a variety of content from an iOS device via something called "AirPlay", but Roku is clearly a bit more flexible at this point That said, a big feature I like about Apple TV that isn't available in Roku is the ability to view iTunes content. I like being able to watch movies on my TV then take them with me on my iPhone for my kids to watch on car trips or plane rides, and Apple has a better, more integrated ecosystem to support such capability. I also like watching YouTube, which I can do on my Apple TV, but not straightforwardly on the Roku as far as I can tell (EDIT: apparently there's a secret beta YouTube channel if you Google for it, but it's not highlighted in the channel store). --------------------------------------------------------- User Experience/Interface --------------------------------------------------------- I think the biggest disadvantage of Roku vs Apple TV is in its user experience. Took a chance on this Samsung and ordered it without a lot of information availabe because it is so new but glad I did. Just got it out of the box today and everything works great. Easily set up the wireless to my home network (and it saved the IP address and encryption key info so I do not need to sign on each time). There are few units (if any) with all the features this unit offers at this price. This unit offers solid access to You Tube, various videos on demand services, Pandora (love Pandora!), and it sees all my videos and photos on my computer in multiple ways (with their Samsung PC Share Manager and direct acess) all through the network. The pics load a little slow, but the files are big. Pretty sure if I reduce them down access will speed up. Decent You Tube search feature (for a TV remote as a typing device). Easy to find my own You Tube videos Anyway, all enclosed in a solid state with minimal hassle. I would give it 5 stars except there is still a learning curve on managing my files from the PC and I am still getting the hang of some applications Samsungs, but I am sure it will get better. I first entered the incorrect encryption key and did not have a password error but it has been said to the IP address was wrong. A reboot solved with the right key all. The first HD video I played was a homemade video on my Canon Vixia HF200 HD consumer video and it looked absolutely great. For a first glance, this player is excellent. Yep, I am a happy camper with the whole deal ============================================================ March 17 - update I continue to enjoy this player I had one blue-ray disc that did not work right - a rental, subsequent discs worked fine. I also see services being added. A few free games (nothing great, but there), Blockbuster on Demand is now installed, weather, USA today, and more is coming. Still, my favorite feature by far is being able to view shared files on the TV from my laptop computer through a wireless connection via the home network. Viewing seemed a bit slow at first, but once I began compressing the JPEG's to a more "uploadable" size, they snapped through slideshows with ease. Camcorder videos formatted to WMV are easily played from my laptop and watched on the TV - and they are smooth. It is just so cool to create it on my laptop and watch it on my TV. Just amazing stuff. Love it. Had to re-enter my encyption key once right after a software update but other than that one time, have not had to enter a password again One other software update had no effect. I upped the rating to 5 star. It is excellent. I am already beginning to take it for granted like a good chair that always just works. April 2, 2010 I received this player from Amazon today. Within the first hour I had it hooked up to my home theater system, connected to my wi-fi network, updated the firmware over the web, connected to Netflix, and connected to Pandora. At that point I was ready to log in to Amazon and post a 5 star review. I am glad that I held off because there have been a few problems, but not enough to make me want to return the player Even though I have the latest firmware, 1009.1, Vudu does not.
