Solid Performing Media Player for Local Content By Robert Salita This is a review of the Netgear NeoTV 550 with updated firmware version 3.0.268 EU. I received the device from a European retailer on Nov 30, 2010. The Netgear NeoTV 550 is a complex product to review. Your success with the device is highly dependent upon situational factors such as usage, media source, network speeds, and user technical ability. While the device is easy to use, it requires a home theater geek to properly and optimally set up the device. When first received, I recommend going through the device's Settings menu, drilling down through all the submenus, to properly understand and configure the device. Take the time to go through the several dozen settings and try to make them match your home theater equipment. There are settings for DVD region, video resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, language, audio output (pass-through (bitstreaming)) and so on. The remote is IR based, non-universal, non-learning, and not backlit. Ports include one HDMI port, two USB ports (front and rear), one SD port and one eSATA port. Some Blu-Ray menus require 1GB of storage. This can be a USB stick, SD cartridge or other attached storage device. The unit has no fan and is dead silent. My media consumption is largely local content so this review reflects that bias. Alternatively, other people will use this device for consuming online media. I selected this device because of its rare ability to play Blu-Ray content with full menu support, bitstream audio and WAF. A plus will be when and if it plays Netflix, Vudu or other streaming services. I have hundreds of movies stored on a Windows Home Server (WHS). DVDs are ripped to folders and Blu-Rays are ripped as an ISO file. I tested several dozen DVD and Blu-Ray titles. Blu-Rays and DVDs play fine, audio bitstreams and menus work. The device has a good user interface. Video quality seems quite good too. Movie files are shown as cover art. My girlfriend has given the NeoTV's usability an eager thumbs up whereas the HTPC was impossible for her to use and difficult for me to maintain. I do not use any reencoded media/containers so I can't speak about MKV, FLAC, etc. Initially, I had problems with stuttering on Blu-Ray. This is a common problem on networks that are not optimal. In my case, I had to turn of WHS's Drive Extender on my movie server. There's a host of technical problems that can prevent media, especially Blu-Rays, from playing properly. The device has a network speed test which can help identify some issues. However, my issue was the server's inability to sustain adequate disk read rates. The device offers no diagnostic for this situation. This must all be a nightmare for Netgear tech support -- customers too. Tip: The power button will stop a playing movie and bring up the Home menu. Update 3-Dec-2010: Updated firmware to 3.0.268 EU. It fixes a few annoyances, adds a couple nice touches, leaves a couple bugs not fixed. No sign of Netflix. Perhaps an annoucement next month at CES? Update 4-Dec-2010: Raised the rating to five stars because of resolution to my Blu-Ray networking problems (my bad) and bug fixes in 3.0.268 EU firmware. All's good now. Update 4-Feb-2011: NeoTV 550 is stuttering on some Blu-Ray ISOs when played across a network. Importantly, it does not stutter when playing directly from a file or folder across a network. I believe the NeoTV has some optimization issues on Blu-Ray network playback. I'm hoping the NeoTV developers fix the stutter issue with a firmware update. Otherwise I'll be spending hours converting ISOs to folders. Because of the stuttering issue, I've lowered the rating from five stars to three. Update 7-Feb-2011: I've confirmed that Blu-Ray stuttering is caused by NeoTV's SMB (network protocol) implementation. There's no stuttering when using NFS. This is a major problem as SMB is used by Windows

By Jimbo I purchased this unit to replace the previous version (Seagate FreeAgent Theater HD Media Player (STCEA101-RK)) that didn't play MKV (high definition) video files. CONSIDERATIONS 1. The previous version only displayed 6 items on the screen and it was somewhat difficult to find things with a large number of files. I have a 1.5 TB external drive to hold my movies. Both versions allow me to keep multiple files within a folder, which is handy for a TV series. This newer model displays a whole lot more on the screen--every file on the hard drive--10 at a time. You will need to learn to use the settings available from the Menu button on the remote to view folders and files according to your taste. I have over 300 files on the drive and most of them are TV series, so the interface is somewhat of a challenge if you don't use the Menu button. The unit plays one file after another, so a series with 10 episodes will play all 10 episodes in the order of their alpha-numeric file name. 2. NO S/PDIF coaxial output. This one has an optical outlet for sound, as well as stereo outputs using an A/V mini-plug. 3. Documentation/instructions need major help. THE GOOD NEWS 1. It plays every video file format that I use. It will play a DVD image and most other video formats, including MKV. The audio and video quality are excellent. I compared a DVD movie using a high-end DVD player, my Blu Ray player and a ripped version of the movie using the Seagate FreeAgent player. The movie looked best on the FreeAgent player. It apparently up-converts the video signal, and does a great job of it. It's like having a Blu Ray/DVD player without the delays. 2. My video source is a DLP projector displaying on a 92-inch screen. The long length of my video cables (75 feet) requires me to use component video cables, not HDMI. This unit can output video in both component and HDMI formats, so it's the major reason for me buying the Seagate versus the Western Digital equivalent. 3. Movie, picture and music folders show up 10 at a time. Individual thumbnails show up 10 at a time. Selecting a music album brings up 10 thumbnails of the songs. Click on a song and it shows the song's run time and 4 adjacent songs within the album. Use the Menu button to View List and you'll get a clearer view of the titles. You can play a music selection while viewing pictures. 4. If you have hundreds of movie/music/photo albums, you might find this interface to be a challenge. However, you can quickly scroll the list by holding down the remote up/down buttons to find what you want. Lists of your music files can be searched using the on-screen keyboard--kind of a "clunky" way to do so. 5. The remote is a standard IR type, so you can train your universal remote with its commands. Power off/on is done only via the remote, and the external drive powers off when the unit is off. OTHER Immediately after installation, I connected to the Internet to download the latest (26MB) firmware update. The unit did everything on its own and the process took about 15 minutes. All cables except HDMI and optical audio are included. Connecting to my home network was simple, once I figured out how to find the on-screen keyboard (you have to hit the remote's OK button at the Network log on screen for it to appear). I was able to play music from my network while scrolling through my pictures on the network. Wow! This box connects directly to a number of web sites, including Netflix, your local weather forecast, CNN, Youtube, etc., etc. Even a stock market overview! It operates similarly to a netbook without the keyboard. Very cool device for the money! Developer Recommendations: 1. Add a wireless keyboard (you can access an on-screen keyboard via the OK button on the remote). 2. Allow it to appear as a media server on networks. 3. Expand the Internet interface to use typed input. 4. Add coaxial. 5.

Great player for a great price By VegasMike I had my concerns with this player but I found it at a great price and couldn't pass it up. And I am more than satisfied. I don't care about wifi and I won't be getting into 3D for another year or so. All I wanted was a blu ray player that delivered great picture and sound. The setup was a breeze. I plugged it in, connected it to my Onkyo receiver with HDMI cable. Connected an ethernet cable. Downloaded the newest update. Setup Hulu Plus app and played with the settings and I was done. Took maybe a total of 15 minutes. So if you are looking for a great player and 3D, wifi, is not a concern then you cannot go wrong with this bad boy. Also comes with apps like Hulu Plus, Netflix, Youtube, internet radio. There's even a Michael Jackson app, with all his videos. Only glanced at that one but looks cool. There's a few other apps too. Best Blu-Ray player for the right price! By Brian Parramore My previous player was a Magnavox. It was really slow and had no way of connecting to the internet. I picked up this player at Wal-Mart for $94. I'm not sure of how well it does with the wireless adapter, but the LAN works great! You have to buy an adapter if you want wireless, but if you don't have to concern yourself with that, then you shouldn't. This player loads really fast, has great picture quality at 1080i, has loads of extras. Netflix, Youtube and Hulu to name a few. I highly recommend this! My 18y/o daughter had this up and running in 30 minutes. We're watching a NetFlix movie as I write this. I'm not a techie so can't go into detail like some reviews... But it's great to have a nice Blue Ray DVD player that we can get streaming video from online. We own a 50" Panasonic plasma TV with a Panasonic home theater. By Luvlee I recently got this blu ray player to replace a dvd player and was happy with the outcome. This is a fantastic blu ray player it's sleek and slim and produces great quality from both dvds and blu rays. Now why this is rated so low is because people didn't do their research. Yes this is netflix ready and a networking player but it requires a $70 dollar add on in order to do it. If you have the cash it's fantastic and a great home theater addition. Great Blu-ray Player By Sean I was somewhat hesitant to buy this player due to some negative reviews but found it at a great price and have not regretted it. What I love best about this player is how it works with my TV. I wanted to buy a Panasonic Blu-ray player because we have a Panasonic 42" 720p television and the Viera Link works great. What is so awesome for us is that the TV remote operates the main functions you need and works through the television set so we don't need to have the cabinet open in order to see the player which is awesome since our 1 1/2 year old son loves to mess with it. Blu-rays and DVDs look spectacular and I did not buy it for internet applications although it is convenient that firmware can be downloaded directly to the player and we will get Netflix eventually. Woohoo! -Very thin/light/quiet/small. And I mean quiet!! -Attractive, has options in BIOS to turn off the blue light which is great! -I created a bootable SD card using Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe ... if you want to create a bootable SD/USB flash card from a DVD ISO, this is the best way to do it!! Worked like a charm on this unit. -Reasonable speeds... one of the best nettops out there, this is new hardware folks. Cons: -Only one legacy usb port, for some reason my legacy usb devices and thumb drives don't work in the newer high speed usb ports on this, needed to buy a usb hub to be safe. -250GB HD? You do realize people are dishing out $500 for this thing, and using it almost entirely as a livingroom media solution, most likely to rip DVD's, etc... I would expect 500GB at the VERY LEAST. -Would have been happier with more than 2GB RAM, especially at this price point, but that will suffice for most applications of this box. This is not as big of a deal to me. -If you use NetFlix streaming to a TV like I do, be prepared that HD encoding will slow down majorly on this box at times. I turn off HD feature on NetFlix streaming entirely to avoid this. These units are hardware equipped for Flash acceleration, unfortunately NetFlix uses MS Silverlight. This is not Zodac's fault and does not count against them in this review, just pointing that out because I know other people will be trying the same stuff. Overall, you can't get a much sexier nettop than this, but I have to give honest criticism where it is due. Don't cheat your customers on basic necessities. You should have had one less USB 3.0 port, and one more legacy port. This isn't 2015 yet. And you went cheap with the 250GB HD, IMO. I would have gladly spent a few extra bucks for 500GB. But again, gosh this thing looks sexy in my living room next to my TV. Love showing it off. Come to think of it, haven't tried overclocking yet... can't comment on the overclockability of this unit. EDIT: my CPU overclocks stable at 206MHz (base speed) without any changes in fan speed/voltage AND, buy this HD Decoder card that fits perfectly on this Motherboard in the extra mini-pcie slot, it makes a huge difference in your ability to watch streaming HD video without lag/choppiness: (search google for "logicsupply" which is where I got mine, and get the Broadcom Hardware Decoder BCM970015 - PCIe Mini Card (BCM970015)) It was on sale for $35 from this same website when I bought it a couple weeks ago... now it's at $50. I selected this TV based on size and the good picture I saw on this model at Sears. Purchased from Amazon after price shopping. UPS delivered a slightly scuffed up shipping box. The shipping box said it had the AUSYLJR panel. I compared the LG web site contrast ratio to the two different Amazon stated contrast ratio and none agree. Installing the base with eight screws was easy. After my DW assisted me in carefully lifting the TV to the top of my dresser I was ready for the smoke test. But first I noticed a small factory nick on the frame under the protective sticky tape. One star deduction for this blemish. On power up the set went into a simple set up mode but I was stopped cold when it first wanted to scan OTA channels. I hooked up some powered rabbit ears and let it automatically do it's thing. Once that was done I switched the input to an HDMI cable from my cable box and all looked good. It was quite easy getting a WiFi connection. All I had to do was enter my Linky password. Then I clicked on Netflix and got an authorization message. Meanwhile the TV started updating its software which took maybe 10 minutes. After it rebooted I discovered that it erased my Linky password so I entered that again. Now for the Netflix test. I selected the documentary Restrepo, hooked in my headphones and began the Netflix test. Immediately I was blown away by the video and audio quality I was watching. Trust me. It was outstanding ! ! Second day impression: The few free LG apps are a joke. The Facebook app is not very good compared to the Facebook PC web site. The TV broadcast image seemed a lot darker than I liked so I turned off the energy saving mode which solved the problem. I noticed that when my cable DVR, in pause mode, went to a black screen with a small moving screen saver image there was a less black area around the moving image. The Amazon price just dropped on this model. Amazon then agreed to match their new lower price - one time only. First week impression: The LED lighting slightly leaks through the air vent holes on the back of the set. This LG TV is still displaying an outstanding picture but I'm not much a fan of LED TVs. I prefer my older Samy 650 LCD only model in my TV room. This TV was assembled in March 2011 and sold to me by Amazon in April 2011. Amazon seems to change the price up and down on this TV nearly everyday. The LG shipping box goes to trashman today because I'm keeping my baby. Bottom Line: Nice TV. Remote is easy to use, controls are intuitive. It offers a huge number of picture adjustments for calibration purposes. Lots of inputs, and nice slim design. The image is nice and sharp (and not overly sharp). Browse the internet review sites to find some values for setting image parameters up for best image quality (or at least a starting point). The "Cinema" mode isn't bad if you turn off the auto back light (this feature turns the back light off for dark scenes, but it is noticeable on this TV model as it is a global back light. Works but seems rushed to market By Damon Thompson This unit is easy to setup for wireless and does play BR and DVDs without issue. There are however several misconceptions over what this unit does you may get from reading the Vizio website. This unit does not come with an HDMI cable like their website says (the box correctly says it does not). It also does not play any movies/video clips from the USB. The streaming newsfeeds are also text only. Most importantly the website recommends you should get their dual 2.4/5GHz router for best performance. This unit does not have a 5GHz radio so there is no reason to buy their router. The unit also has clunky controls compared to mainline brands. The unit doesn't respond to all commands and doesn't do things like close the disk tray when you push play. It also doesn't have resume play which I consider a necessity. Lack of TV controls on the remote are also a major oversight. All my petty complaints aside the streaming Netflix does have a very nice picture when streaming HD. The buffer seems to be adequate to avoid interruptions. Netflix does drop out occasionally but I think this is Netflix's issue. I did have an issue when operating in 802.11b that it will not connect when positioned on top of my settop box. With 802.11n it does work even when racked. Your results may very on location but there is some interference from other electronics. Pandora operates without any problem and the sound is good over RCA cables. For the price you have to commend Vizio for the features they deliver but I think it's necessary to point out the flaws which most likely came from rushing this product to market. It also doesn't seem to work half the time when you press buttons. Feels like dead batteries but its the remote. It's a Vizio crappy remote thing too, my Vizio TV remote does the same thing. -The included WiFi attachment is actually a small card that sticks out from the back and blinks very brightly. So much in fact it looks like a little strobe light behind my set up. -BD Tray does not close when I click play. -BD doesn't seem to resume play. -BD Live is NOT included regardless of what their website says.
